Tajikistan is
bordered on the north by Kyrgyzstan, on
the north and west by Uzbekistan, on the east by China, and on the
south by Afghanistan. The country is
extremely mountainous and more than half of the country lies at an
elevation of 3,000 meters ( 9,850 ft.). Famous Pamir mountains are
located in part of Tajikistan. Also,Ismail Smani, the highest
peak of the former Soviet Union rises in Pamirs of Tajikistan,
Another chain, Tien Shan covers the northern and central Tajikistan.
Tajikistan is rich in rivers and lakes. Syr Derya flows through the
Fergana valley in the north. The Panj river flows in the south and
forms the border with Afghanistan. The Panj and Vakhsh rivers
forms the Amu Derya river in the south. Kofarnihon river also joins
the Amu Derya river. Most of the lakes in Tajikistan are located at
high elevations in the mountains. The largest lake, Karakul lies at
an altitude of 4,000 meters ( 13,000 ft. ). |

The climate of Tajikistan changes from
region to region, with the greatest temperature differences between
mountainous and lowland areas. The lowlands have a continental
climate, with hot summers and cold winters. In the northern
lowlands, at Khojand, the average daily temperature in July is 26°C
(80°F), and in January it is -1°C (30°F). Summer temperatures can
reach as highs as 48°C (118°F) in the valleys. Between June and
October, strong dust storms are common in steppes. In the eastern
mountains the average daily temperature in July is less than 10°C
(less than 50°F), while in January it is as low as –20°C
(-4°F). Extreme winter temperatures can easily fall below –60°C
(below -76°F) in the eastern Pamirs. |
